All of our apartments are in complexes where staff is on site regularly, so you can have easy access to support when you need it. Most youth ages 12 to 17 who go to the shelter stay for about a week, Thesing said. During that time, they are connected with counseling and other wraparound services until they find a stable living situation and move on.

Another 4,000 will be at risk of homelessness, unsure of where they will sleep on any given night. Strictly Necessary Cookie should be enabled at all times so that we can save your preferences for cookie settings. We’ve partnered with our Rustic Canyon Family sister, Esters Wine Shop & Bar, to offer regional beers and planet-friendly wines that are made with craftsmanship & care. Use huckleberries like you would any other berry to make delicious muffins, pies, or cobblers. You can even use them for savory dishes like this lemony quinoa with chickpeas and huckleberries. Some find huckleberries unpleasant when eaten raw because of their mealy texture, so it's best to cook them instead.

We also have a single bathroom you can use if you don’t feel comfortable using a shared bathroom space. When you stay at the Crisis Shelter, you—and your family, whenever possible—will participate in counseling for 30 minutes to an hour each day. Our counselors really want to help figure out a solution to your unique situation. And we believe that the best work is done when the whole family is involved. Our counselors will try to involve your family as much as they are willing and able to participate.

Huck House offers a special Housing Program specifically for victims of domestic violence. We dedicate several of our apartments to people who have experienced domestic violence and we provide additional security and support, as well as around-the-clock access to workers trained in safety planning and victim services. We help residents learn to feel safe living their lives during the day and closing their eyes at night. The Domestic Violence Project is made possible by a grant from the federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA). Huck House receives referrals from CHOICES, Central Ohio’s only domestic violence shelter. We will also accept referrals from the Center for Family Safety and Healing and the Salvation Army Human Trafficking Program.
Tyrae's Story
While each situation is unique, you typically need a parent or guardian’s permission to stay. Our staff is good at convincing guardians to allow young people to stay here. No matter your situation, we encourage you to come in and talk to us, and we will do our best to get you permission to stay.

Our staff is always there for you to provide counseling and support and to work with you on skills. While the rules differ by apartment and complex, we’ll work with you on a schedule that meets your needs. Huckleberry House was formed in 1970 by a group of University Area churches who recognized a need to keep runaway and homeless teens safe and off the street. Together, they formed what we now call the Teen Crisis Shelter.
Here's what to expect at the Crisis Shelter:

Our mission is to educate, inspire, and support youth to develop healthy life choices, maximize their potential, and realize their dreams. Huck House partners with Donatos Restaurants, Columbus Fire Stations, and many Library systems throughout the Columbus area that can help arrange to get you here safely. To find a Safe Place site, send a text to 4HELP (44357) with the word SAFE and your current location. But what started as a single day of employees and some workers they had recruited from Sherwin-Williams volunteering turned into a largescale project on the first floor of the shelter. Beginning in late June, the company provided new flooring and paint and added a second laundry room in the crisis shelter valued at $40,000, Thesing said. The Family Support Program launches to provide young people and their families with ongoing support for developing strengths and tackling a wide range of family issues. Every year, hundreds of youth in our community find outgoing support at The Counseling Center at Huckleberry House. Through a continuum of care service model, the program creates a network of support for positive, healthy adolescent development.
This collaborative spirit is part of what keeps central Ohio a growing and vibrant community. Yet, thousands of young people in Franklin County are disconnected from the many opportunities offered in this community, and from the adults they can trust for the support they need. Most recently, Huckleberry House underwent a renovation to the second-floor living space of the Hamlet Street crisis shelter valued at $123,223. The Columbus chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) provided parts and labor valued at $92,423, and Columbus City Council approved a $26,300 grant to support the project. The Transitional Living Program introduces its domestic violence track, initially dedicating 10 TLP apartments in a secure, alarmed, staffed buildingto victims of domestic abuse.
In 2024, 3,000 young people, ages 14 to 24, will experience homelessness in Franklin County. A 3% charge is added by the restaurant to all checks to help offer fully covered health care to all employees. Scientific jargon aside, blueberries and huckleberries can be nearly identical in appearance, both ranging in color from red to purple to blue and even black.
Huckleberry House works with Central Ohio’s youth and families who are dealing with issues like abuse, violence, neglect, poverty, and homelessness. 17-year old “Tyrae” had lived a difficult seven years before coming to the Huck House teen crisis shelter in October. By age 14, she dropped out of school and fell in to human trafficking, drugs and prostitution. Those six months convinced Tyrae that she wanted a different life.
In the ensuing years, as Huckleberry House's reach has expanded and its mission has continued to grow, that 117-year-old house has remained largely the same. The Transitional Living Program begins its parent mentor program to provide young parents in the program with support for building parenting skills. They run because they don’t know how to deal with family dynamics at home, or because they are experiencing an unsafe situation and feel there is no other escape. Once they are on their own, many don’t have anywhere to go, or they don’t know where to get help. We have shared dorms and shared bathrooms, and a few private rooms, and they are monitored around-the-clock by our staff.
You can even preserve their tart/sweet flavor with jams and jellies. Huckleberries have 10 large, hard seeds, whereas blueberries have lots of tiny seeds that are barely noticeable. And, we are grateful to our community for all of the support. The work began in mid-September, with NARI’s members providing labor and such materials as flooring and paint before Huckleberry House announced the project's completion Nov. 20. For nearly four decades, young people in Greater Columbus who have found themselves without reliable shelter often have sought — and always found — refuge at a three-story home in Weinland Park on the city's North Side. The new, larger space allows for Crisis Shelter dorm rooms, counseling space, and administrative offices.
A tumultuous relationship with family, many of whom live out of state, caused her to be on her own for quite some time. “I didn’t want to go to the adult shelter, so I found the Huck House crisis program.” While at the shelter, Shay learned about the Transitional Living Program. On her 18th birthday, Shay moved to Huck House’s apartments at Jefferson Avenue. The Huck House Crisis Shelter is not a detention center, a jail, or a scared straight program. We do some arts and crafts, we go on walks to the park, we visit pet stores, and we go to the movies sometimes. We try to make sure that we get you out of the house at least once a day.
